The drought has broken

Well maybe not - not wanting to tempt fate or anything, but the region is currently undergoing some reasonable rainfall at last - with 35 mm being recorded in the last 7 hours. I came across the photo below, which I guess sums it up - it's of the motorway at the bottom of the Maungaraki hill (those that know the area, the Dowse to Petone interchange work)

Heavy Rain announces arrival of Autumn

Severe weather in the Wellington region has been a distant memory for the past few months. Luckily, after an extremely wet spring, summer has been unremarkable, meaning that those in the region have enjoyed a number of the warm windless days that Wellingtonians live in the area for.

The calm came to an abrupt halt on the morning of Wednesday 2nd March when torrential rain fell in the area causing significant flooding. The MetService, located in Wellington's central suburb of Kelburn, recorded 10mm of rain in just 4 minutes! Additionally, within a 2 hour period, over half the monthly average for May was recorded in Wellington. Further details can be found here

The rain caused a number of accidents along with several slips in the region.

Further up the Hutt Valley, where the Maungaraki weather station is located, just 17mm of rain was recorded in the same period, indicating how patchy the heavy rainfall was.

Meso Map Live comes to Hutt Weather

Meso Map live is now running on the Hutt Weather website. Meso Map Live, delivers near real time readings from contributing weather stations from around the world. Readings displayed include temperature, wind speed, and current conditions, along with a host of other information. Two maps have been set up - one containing a number of stations in the Wellington and Hutt Valley area, and the other containing a range of stations throughout New Zealand.

You can access MML in two ways - either via Weather Display Live (Live Weather) or via Meso Map Live. Both these items can be found on the left hand menu.

The big wind followed by the big wet

Wellingtons winter weather of discontent continued this week, with strong northwesterly winds pushing heavy rainfall across the region in the last 48 hours.

A record high wind gust of 102 km/h was recorded on the 14th of November and this was followed by a deluge of 51mm on the 18th November, and 36mm on the day previous. This again lead to slips throughout the region and road closures due to flooding, particularly around low lying areas near the Hutt River.

24 Oct 06 - Heavy rainfall in Wellington region

Labour weekend 2006 once again lived up to it's reputation, with a band of heavy rainfall passing over the Wellington region.

Rain occured earlier in the week, in a weather system that stalled as it moved northwards, due to a deepening low to the North West of New Plymouth. As the low deepened, it moved down across the bottom of the North Island, and out towards the south east, bringing with it the rain.

Southerly winds of 50Km/h were measured in Maungaraki, with winds in excess of 100Km/h measured at Mt Kaukau. Approx 60mm of rain fell in one 24 hour period, drenching the area, and causing further landslides in Eastbourne.

Cook Strait sailings were cancelled as southerly swells rolled into the harbour. When resumed, the normal 3 hour journey took 10 hours to complete, as the ferry sheltered in Clifford Bay, waiting for a 6m swell to abate.

Large Slip Undermines House in Kelson

August 8th, 2006
Four houses in Kelson (Western Hills, Hutt Valley) have been evacuated after a slip has undermined a house in the area. The slip, apparently as a result of sodden ground after a sustained period of rain, has left one house teetering on the edge of a cliff, and three houses in it’s path should it fall.

There has not been significant rainfall in the last 24 hours (11mm) however 27 mm fell yesterday, and over 80 mm have fallen in the last 8 days. The slip come on top of similar slips at Horokiwi and Eastborne where other houses have been threatened.

Rain is predicted to continue for the next 3 days. We’ll keep you updated if there are any further changes

More details can be found on the INL Stuff Website
